Barrie discovered CDMS through a Google search for barn conversions and property renovations. After spending quite some time panicking about the state of the property he had purchased, and several quotes that were way above budget, Barrie was able to feel confident that his vision would be brought to life by CDMS Sussex – within a much more reasonable budget.

Looking to fine-tune and restore a number of the original features in addition to expanding the size of the property considerably, Barrie was recommended to get back in touch with us once he had obtained planning permission, and that is exactly what he did. Within weeks of first contact our teams were able to visit the property and assess the brief, which meant work could commence in December 2021.

The brief

The property was in need of some real TLC. Structural engineering, electrical and water supply solutions were needed in order to re-fit and re-purpose multiple spaces throughout the house, while some additional work was required to extend the main building and create an adjacent 3-bedroom annexe that the family would live in while work to the main property would take place.

Barrie was looking to transform the existing property while maintaining many of the character-rich elements, making a beautiful family home with the vision of one day turning the annexe into an on-site Airbnb/guesthouse.

The property would need to be completely gutted (and in some places even rebuilt from the ground up) but some fantastic chats about the possibilities for the space inspired Barrie and our teams to develop some exciting concepts that they couldn’t wait to bring to life.

The outcome

The team worked tirelessly to deliver a full scope of services, including:

  • Oak flooring and bespoke carpeting throughout the entire ground floor of the property to create natural ‘zones’ in living spaces.
  • The lounge area has been created from what was previously two rooms with beautiful new bay windows and a supporting oak beam in keeping with original oak features throughout.
  • The property has had a complete rewire and replumb, with a new gas meter and water mains fitted. Three-phase electrical fitting has also been installed to support the annexe and the heat pump for the pool.
  • The kitchen-diner (aka, the hub of the home) has been fitted with wall units and a bespoke triangular-shaped island with a radiused edge. The dining area has a flat panelled Velux roof overhead that floods the room with natural light, complementing the custom bifold doors leading to the garden and pool area.
  • The downstairs bathroom sits off of the utility room, featuring a vaulted ceiling with another Velux window and a Victorian-styled high-level pull system toilet as another nod to original features from the property.
  • The house is full of handmade oak doors and windows in keeping with its original characteristics.
  • Upstairs an original brick wall has been re-pointed and a feature fireplace restored as another element of the character and charm this building has.
  • Every bedroom in the property has an en-suite bathroom with a walk-in shower.
  • Georgian features lead at the front of the house, in addition to the rear elevation featuring plain casements that are fire-safe to building regulations with trickle vents and egress windows.
