80’s Semi Detached Transformation

About the project

Lisa and Arron bought their 1980’s semi detached house in 2009. It was meant to be a stop gap, while their kids were growing up and finishing school. Both have now flown the nest. They discussed moving back into the centre of Brighton, but space is such a commodity there, they opted to reconfigure their current house, turning it from a UPVC, rabbit warren to a modern, open plan space where they could gather to cook, entertain and enjoy their garden views.

The problems

The existing layout was a large living-dining area that spanned the width of the house and a small kitchen situated at the front of the building. This meant that cooking was a very solitary task, leaving very little room for others to join in or help. Between the kitchen and living area was a much needed downstairs shower room so that simply taking out a supporting wall was not the full story, all manner of redirects of piping and electrics had to be considered.

The solution

Lisa and Arron love to socialise, host dinner parties, for friends and family. And of course, they like nothing more than to have the extended family round for Christmas. So, it was really important to them, that the area was a multi-functional space for cooking, hosting, relaxing, and now and then for a bit of dancing. We scaled down the size of the shower room and moved it to the front of the house, removing the internal hall wall and the wall separating the dining area, creating a beautiful open plan feel.

The finishing touches

By keeping the kitchen units matt white, and pairing them with an understated snow white quartz, it had the effect of allowing light to move around the whole area. We finished the walls with cool and muted colours, to contrast with the bespoke solid limed oak floors, stair handrails and spindles. These natural tones are brought to life with Lisa’s art works, of eclectic prints, glass and vintage mirrors and carefully chosen soft furnishings. The revamped stair way was completed with stylish bound stair runners to compliment the white finish of the stairs and new bespoke skirting.

What the client said

“CDMS Sussex, really brought our vision to life. As you can imagine, living in a building site is not fun, but Tony and his team, went above and beyond to deliver us our dream home with as little drama as possible. Tony was so patient, we changed our minds a number of times about finishing’s, moved things, and ask A LOT of questions. He not only, always had time to reassure us and give his ideas freely, nothing was too much trouble.”
