Alciston is situated in an area of outstanding rural beauty. This quite ancient village sits surrounded by a grid of working farms and lays in the shadows of the rolling hills of the South Downs. The area is speckled with historic flint walled out-buildings and barns that have been so much a part of the workings of the land. Repurposing and renovating this flint barn at Alciston was a delight and a challenge
Contact UsOnce planning permission was sought and gained for the listed barn at Alfriston, plans to turn this large structure into an impressive, comfortable, energy efficient living space were developed by CDMS Sussex. The remit for the overall design was to incorporate as much of the natural construction as possible into the regeneration but also to use and enhance the barn’s own idiosyncrasies to make every part distinctive from any other barn renovation.
Renovation or alteration of listed buildings can be a challenge as one navigates the confines and restrictions of listed status. CDMS Sussex have years of experience working with Sussex Heritage and know how to deliver solutions to both accomplish the home owner’s vision whilst maintaining the character and legacies of our historic buildings. On this project, we were able to restore the flint walling to its original outstanding beauty as well as installing highly advanced energy systems, showing how the fabric of old structures can accommodate and compliment modern living and continue to be enjoyed and purposeful for years to come.
Working within the guidance and regulations of Sussex Heritage, the barn was brought to life by installing a second floor, an exquisite mezzanine and large viewing windows spanning two floors. This brought in essential light and feeling of space. Vaulted ceilings, oak trusses, doors, skirting and openings were all hand made from the finest ethically sourced FSC oak, giving the barn that natural and authentic aura of the peaceful English country side. The balustrades, rails and staircases were entirely hand made of oak to match the solid oak flooring. The roof was renewed using reclaimed tiles and roof windows were installed to increase light to the upper areas of the barn.
The barn has become a warm, spacious living area, abundant with new features for convenient family life. The barn has been given new breath through this complex restoration and we are really pleased that it will continue to be part of this lovely countryside location for many years to come.
