With exquisite lawns and views from the rear of the house the idea was to add additional visitor or recreational space that engaged with the stunning natural surroundings using light, space and natural materials. The key was to give the annexe a sense of harmony and synergy with both the original house and the local environment. From the outset the construction had to be built with energy saving measures to keep heat in, keep energy bills down and keep it comfortable for family use all year round.
Contact UsThe build was carefully managed to minimise any impact to the immediate locality. All of the sumptuous seasoned oak used throughout the annexe was fully FSC Certified (The Forest Stewardship Council) so traceable to a sustainably managed forest, an important consideration for CDMS Sussex. The installation of underfloor heating throughout the annexe was a must for all year round comfort, and low energy soft LED lighting throughout, meant lower bills and higher cosiness.
Using timber as the main decorative and structural focus of the build gave it a sense of warmth and tranquillity. The oak trusses, bi-fold doors, kitchen, veranda and outside cladding were all hand-made to bespoke designs. The fittings were of the best quality and chosen to match the style of the property. The roof construction and tiling were finished to blend seamlessly with the texture and colour of the main house and the window casements were designed to emulate the older windows of the house extension to the right of the annexe.
The result was a large, homely, entirely self-contained annexe, with the most modern and advanced facilities created around a sumptuous oak structure. The veranda opens up to a really useful area, a sun trap for those relaxing Summer evening gatherings or weekend bbq’s with the family.
To continue the theme of rural comfortable living, CDMS Sussex were asked to design and make oak furniture and so large cupboards, desks, dining tables and storage chests were hand made to match the oak construction. Soft furnishings and rugs, white goods and media systems were chosen by the owners to compliment the overall theme of space and engagement with nature.
